She tried her hand at opera singing, spent a fortune on her 21st birthday and went on to marry an indie-rockstar. She's loved in her iconic roles as Juliet in Love Actually, Elizabeth Swann in the Pirates of the Caribbean films and definitely knows how to pull off a good bit of period costume, as seen in Pride and Prejudice and Anna Karenina.
Her mother has written on projects such as movie, The Edge of Love in which Keira starred as one of the leading roles, alongside Sienna Miller and acted in television series such as The Olympian Way. Keira Knightley was actually supposed to be named "Kiera", but her mother made a bit of a 'typo' on the birth certificate. Keira has said in the past that she was somewhat of a bet and that her mum was desperate for another child, but her dad told her that the only way they could afford to have one was if she sold a play. Keira has dyslexia and had to wear a special kind of glasses when she was younger to help her read.
At six years old, her parents realised she couldn't read and had been "fooling them". Keira's mum once told her: "If you come to me with a book in your hand and a smile on your face every day through the summer holiday, I'll get you an agent.
She had been asking for an agent since the age of three, thinking it was the normal thing to have as her parents both had one of their own. On the day of auditions in London for a new blockbuster movie, titled 'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl', Keira got stuck in very heavy traffic.
She almost missed auditions completely and had to be added on to the end of the day's auditions list. However, when setting off to film, she only packed for a week because she was certain film bosses would change their minds and sack her. In the film, Keira trained and performed her own football skills before our very eyes - that's right, there were no stand-ins or stunt doubles, as the production company simply couldn't afford to provide them.
Keira's actually a West Ham supporter in real life, so it's easy to see why she was so excited for the film. It was actually re-released to 1, screens across America. In , Keira sued The Daily Mail after a photograph of her in a bikini was placed next to an article about a woman who blamed slim celebrities for the death of her daughter, from anorexia.
The case was settled and Keira matched the settlement damages and donated the total amount to an eating disorder charity. Keira played the decoy queen in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, but her role was kept secret so as not to spoil the surprise. Natalie Portman played the role of the real queen, but throughout promotion for the film, it was maintained that she'd play the decoy, too. During filming, the two actresses looked so similar when in makeup that even their own mothers couldn't tell them apart.
When she was 16, Keira went to college to study for her A Levels, but quit the course when she was offered the role of Lara Antopova in Dr Zhivago.
She said: "I tried college for three months but I was desperately unhappy. I just wanted to perform. I was getting straight As but I had no friends and cried every day. A few days before her audition for the role of Jackie Price in film, 'The Jacket', Keira had suffered food poisoning. She continued with her audition in spite of this and the filmmakers praised her "acting".
They felt she really nailed the character of Jackie Price - a woman with many issues of loss and pain, as well as being physically sick in general. In a poll by the Royal National Institute for the Blind, to celebrate 70 years of their Talking Books service, Keira was voted to have the second sexiest voice. The pair began dating in and, on May 4, , were married in an intimate ceremony in the south of France.
They apparently met while very, VERY drunk at a mutual friend's dinner party. They got engaged a year later. She says that if she sees a pair of shoes she loves, she will buy them Even if they aren't in her size! She did around two hours of weightlifting and then three hours of either boxing, fighting or horse riding. Keira said that auditioning for the role of Christine in the movie was the most embarrassing moment of her life because she says she knew she couldn't sing it.
The green satin gown she wore in Atonement was voted the public's favorite film costume of all time in a survey by Sky Movies and In Style magazine, in January She loved the script, but couldn't commit as the shooting schedule conflicted with 'Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End'.
She was also considered for the role of Ann in film, 'Evening', but again her schedule conflicted. She was originally cast as Mary Boleyn in 'The Other Boleyn' , but dropped out before filming and Scarlett Johansson was cast instead. She was originally cast as Eliza Doolittle in 'My Fair Lady', but dropped out of the project and the role went to her friend Carey Mulligan. Keira was two months pregnant with her daughter, Delilah, when she completed filming Misbehaviour out this year.
